Launching a U.S.-specific app could be part of the company's broader plan to comply with a 2024 law requiring ByteDance to divest from TikTok.
The app is expected to operate on a separate algorithm and data system and users outside the US would not find this version in their app store, sources said.

Digital Music News on MSNIt’s Not Just TikTok: US-Based Version of CapCut May Also Be in the WorksTikTok owner ByteDance has plans to release a US-specific version of its video editing app CapCut as a TikTok deal draws nearer. Reports have surfaced that China-based ByteDance is creating a US-specific version of TikTok in order to comply with the federal divest-or-ban law passed last year—and it looks like TikTok isn’t the only app
Popular video-sharing app TikTok is still available to US users only because President Trump issued an executive order in early 2025 to postpone the ban the Chinese app is facing. Trump has extended the delay two more times since then, with the latest extension coming just a few weeks ago.
Under a US law, TikTok must be sold or banned in the US by September 17. Trump appears to have been stuck in a tough spot all year, because the final terms of the deal may not allow current owner ByteDance to own more than 20 percent of the platform or maintain any control over TikTok's algorithm or data-sharing practices.
President Trump said on Friday he will start talking to China on Monday or Tuesday about a possible TikTok deal.
