Emirati authorities said Monday three suspects from Uzbekistan were in custody over the murder of a rabbi, a rare violent incident involving an Israeli citizen in the UAE, which signed a peace agreement with Israel in 2020.

Three suspects have been arrested after the body of a Chabad rabbi was found in what Israel is calling an “antisemitic terror incident.” Zvi Kogan, an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi serving as the UAE’s Chabad representative went missing on Thursday.

The killing of the Jewish community leader has raised concerns about security for Jews in the Arab world.

Three suspects held in the United Arab Emirates over the murder of an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi are from Uzbekistan, authorities in the Gulf state announced Monday, saying they were working to determine their motives.

“The murder of the late Chabad emissary Zvi Kogan in the Emirates is a cowardly and despicable antisemitic act of terror,” Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on social media after Kogan’s body was discovered. “The State of Israel will not rest nor be silent until those responsible for this criminal act pay for their actions.”

An Israeli rabbi who went missing in the United Arab Emirates has been found murdered, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said.

The United Arab Emirates' interior ministry said on Monday that the suspects arrested in the alleged killing Israeli-Moldovan rabbi Zvi Kogan were from Uzbekistan, the state news agency WAM reported.
