Officials: Many more injured, death toll could rise. Investigators say they don’t believe the incident was an attack.
Beatrice Pilloud, the prosecutor general of the Valais canton in Switzerland, told the New York Times that evidence suggests that the sparkler-topped bottles were held too close to the ceiling in the basement of the popular bar in the Alps, Le Constellation.
An official said the sparklers were attached to bottles of champagne held too close to the ceiling. Forty people died and more than 100 were injured. Many of the victims were teenagers.
Badly burned teenagers were sent to hospitals across Europe for treatment; the blaze likely was caused by sparklers, officials said.
