The temblor occurred at 10:47 pm local time at a depth of 10 km, measuring lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of the prefecture, said the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Ishikawa and surrounding prefectures in central Japan on Tuesday night, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The agency confirmed no tsunami warning was issued.

Earlier on 1 January 2024, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto region, killing more than 370 people and damaging roads and other infrastructure.
