Sometime after 10 a.m., Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood Great Plains performed the first elective abortion in the state since voters overturned the state’s ban in November. The moment also marked the first abortion at its Kansas City clinic since 2018.

The announcement followed a Friday court ruling that invalidated state restrictions a judge deemed "discriminatory" and "unnecessary."

A Missouri Circuit Court judge moved to temporarily block the state’s “discriminatory” abortion restriction, striking down a licensing requirement for clinics providing the procedure.

The ruling marks a key moment in the push by abortion rights supporters to restore access to abortion across Missouri.

Women in Missouri are expected to have access to abortion services within days, after a circuit court judge ruled business licenses imposed by the state on Planned Parenthood clinics were too onerous.

Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Jerri Zhang previously struck down a number of “targeted regulation of abortion provider” statutes, but left state licensing requirements in place. Planned Parenthood argued the state licensing rules were an obstacle to providing abortions in Missouri.

Voters approved the measure adding abortion rights to the constitution in November in an amendment that required judges to reconsider laws that had almost completely banned the procedure.
