Teenagers as young as 14 and 15 were among the victims of the deadly fire at a ski resort bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, police said Sunday, raising questions about whether sufficient age checks were in place.

Police said they worked with the Institute of Forensic Medicine and the country’s disaster victim identification protocol to return the victims to their loved ones.

More affordable prices and the lack of an entrance fee made the bar an attractive alternative to more upmarket establishments.

Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana was owned by a French couple and is now under scrutiny. A New Year’s Eve fire inside the bar killed at least 40 people and injured others.

It was a haven for the young, where they could find hot chocolate when they wanted quiet and affordable drinks when they did not. Then it turned into a place of death.

French national Jacques Moretti, who is in his 60s, now faces charges over the deadly fire at Le Constellation in Crans–Montana, Switzerland, on New Year's Day.
