The county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to a $4.05 million settlement with the family of Akeem Terrell. The 31-year-old Phoenix resident was seen in security footage during jail custody on Jan. 1, 2021, as officers trying to change his handcuffs descended on him.

Nearly four years after a man died while restrained in a Phoenix jail cell, his family will be awarded a $4 million settlement, county officials have decided.

Republicans, which held a 4-1 majority prior to the 2024 general election, are poised to keep control of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
