Flames and smoke were visible around the Casco Bay Friday night, leaving smokey remains on one of Portland’s iconic wharfs.
A spokesperson for the Portland Fire Department says it's unclear how many businesses were affected, but a repair shop is reportedly a total loss and it appears that Maritime Antiques and the Sea Bags Factory sustained heavy damage.
PORTLAND, Maine — Emergency crews in Portland were responding Friday evening to a large fire at Portland Pier. Portland fire officials urged drivers to avoid the area shortly before 6 p.m. while they were responding to a three-alarm fire.
Crews knocked down flames on the roof of Maritime Antiques and checked neighboring businesses to ensure they were not occupied. The crews also ran hoses to the adjacent Sea Bags building. Eventually, firefighters were called off the roof, and it soon collapsed, sending a plume of smoke down the alley toward Commercial Street.
Portland Fire and the FMO returned to the scene on Saturday, December 27. Authorities have determined there was no indication of foul play. However, due to the extent of the damage, the FMO says an exact cause of the fire being identified is "unlikely". The investigation remains ongoing.
Portland Fire and Rescue is reminding residents that personal fireworks are illegal in the city and offering an online reporting tool for New Year's Eve.
