The Morton Chamber of Commerce is encouraging people to shop locally this Saturday. The Saturday after Thanksgiving is known as “Small Business Saturday.” It is a yearly tradition that began in 2010 to get people to shop at locally-owned businesses by offering discounts to customers.

Wedged between Black Friday, when many people storm big-box retailers for bargains, and Cyber Monday, when shoppers rely on their devices to find the best deals — Small Business Saturday encourages buyers to spend their money in locally owned shops, restaurants and other businesses.

Yearly event is a resounding retort to the immensely popular Black Friday “Many businesses in Malibu continue to close their doors!” A local retailer recently bemoaned. One need only glance around to realize that is true.

The District Director of the Small Business Administration reports that there are nearly 450,000 small businesses across the state.

For those in the city wanting to shop small after the big Thanksgiving and Black Friday rush, Small Business Saturday has the perfect setup. The event started in 2010, and is aimed at celebrating small businesses in their communities.
