Known now as a day of patriotism and enjoying time off from work, the Fourth of July began the journey to becoming a quintessential American holiday in 1776, when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.

The US map is covered across each letter of "Google," and the Doodle follows the white, red, and iconic blue color scheme with white stars over it.

The United States celebrates its 249th Fourth of July this year. Cities around the country will have parades, fireworks and food events for families gathering to celebrate the country's independance day.
