Newly released footage shows the violent arrest of a 22-year-old man during a February traffic stop by Jacksonville deputies, sparking renewed scrutiny of the department’s use of force.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office alleges William McNeil Jr., 22, was reaching for a knife during the traffic stop before officers used force.

Footage of William McNeil Jr.'s arrest sparked a social media furor. Sheriff T.K. Waters said more video showed "context."

You have to do as the officers ask you to do,” said Waters. “It’s not negotiable. You can’t shut the door and say no and lock it.”

Renowned personal injury and civil rights attorney Ben Crump has joined the legal team of a man who was punched by Jacksonville police during a traffic stop in February.

A traffic stop in Jacksonville that escalated into violence and went viral is now heading toward a legal confrontation. William McNeil Jr., who was pulled over by Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officers in February, has enlisted the help of civil rights attorneys Ben Crump and Harry Daniels.

The video has been viewed more than two million times and shows officers smashing a car window and hitting 22-year-old William McNeil Jr. in the face.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said it has launched an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding an incident that occurred in February, but was shown in a video posted to social media early Sunday morning.
