The Trump administration has repeatedly said the U.S. should be in control of Greenland, which is part of Denmark and NATO.

There is a historical basis for ramping up the U.S. military presence in Greenland: during the Cold War, the U.S. had thousands of troops there.

Denmark and its NATO allies pushed back Tuesday after Trump's deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller claimed the U.S. has a right to Greenland and did not rule out use of American military force to seize it.

Should the "darkest hour" come, and the U.S. uses military force to annex Greenland, "the essence of Article 5 and collective defense within NATO would lose its meaning," the Atlantic Council reported.
