Austin's first Poet Laureate will hold a two-year position to promote poetry, literacy and literary arts in Austin.

Dr. Melba Joyce Boyd, a distinguished professor, has been named Michigan's third poet laureate. Boyd is an award-winning author with 13 published books and a passion for promoting poetry.

The longtime Central Texas creative with experience in poetry and theater was named to the new position in March.
