A small elephant approached a waterhole in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve in South Africa and got too close to a lapwing. But the tiny bird suddenly became very territorial with the curious calf.

After the show, Jumbo and a small elephant called Tom Thumb were being loaded into a circus boxcar when an unscheduled freight train came hurtling down the tracks towards them. Tom Thumb survived.
