The rodents are enjoying marijuana at the Houston Police Department that has been sitting in evidence for years.

Rodents infiltrated a narcotics evidence room at Houston police’s headquarters, accessing drugs and potentially disrupting open criminal cases. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is notifying defense attorneys in more than 3,

"We've got 400,000 lbs. of marijuana in storage, that the rats are the only ones enjoying it," said Houston Mayor John Whitmire.

The Houston Police Department, the Mayor's office, and the District Attorney's Office are teaming up for a holistic approach to battle the weed-eating rodents.

"Drug-addicted rats" are eating narcotics seized and stored by Houston police, prompting a change in how long the police department is required to store the evidence, officials said.

To illustrate the problem further, Houston police Chief J. Noe Diaz pointed to one piece of cocaine evidence from 1996 that was still in the lockup. The person tied to the drugs pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and has been released.

The property room contains a backlog of thousands of pounds of evidence that is no longer needed, including notes from a homicide that occurred in 1947, and kilos of cocaine from the 1990s.

Apart from being addicted to marijuana, rats are also tripping on psilocybin by eating packaging that contains mushrooms.
