The first explosion set off a chain of blasts in Rome and was so loud and violent that it struck nearby buildings "like an earthquake."

At least 45 people were injured by two accidental explosions at a Rome gas station at 8 a.m. local time on Friday.

Rai Radio 1 described a "loud explosion" heard in many neighbourhoods and added that a tall column of smoke was visible from various parts of the city. One resident said: "Crazy explosion in Rome, between Quadraro and Centocelle. I saw a huge flame, and the whole house shook."
