Teenagers as young as 14 and 15 were among the victims of the deadly fire at a ski resort bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, police said Sunday, raising questions about whether sufficient age checks were in place.

More affordable prices and the lack of an entrance fee made the bar an attractive alternative to more upmarket establishments.

"Nightclubs are not fire-safety friendly places," said Milad Haghani, associate professor of urban resilience and mobility at the University of Melbourne. He noted the danger of flammable soundproofing insulation, commonly found in such disasters.

On Saturday, Swiss police announced they had opened an investigation into the managers of the bar for negligent manslaughter, negligent bodily harm and negligent arson. Swiss police also identified four of the victims including two young women, aged 21 and 16, and two young men, 18 and 16.

Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana was owned by a French couple and is now under scrutiny. A New Year’s Eve fire inside the bar killed at least 40 people and injured others.
