North Carolina voters won’t know until at least Monday — nearly a month after Election Day — who won the race for a seat on the state Supreme Court.

North Carolina county election boards began their recounts Wednesday in a much-watched Supreme Court contest in which just over 600 votes separate the Democratic and Republican candidates.

The narrowly trailing Republican candidate in the race for a North Carolina Supreme Court seat has formally requested a statewide recount.

Four Legislature races and one state Supreme Court race were not certified by the North Carolina State Board of Elections on Tuesday. Notably, the state’s sole Supreme Court race between Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs and Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin is one of those currently under both recount and protest.

The North Carolina Elections Board has certified the results from the November election. More than 5.7 million voters were counted, which is a 73% turnout. However, 10 races are going to a recount.
