In a post on their X page, the zoo announced that their tamandua (a small species of anteater) pair, Winnie and Mr. Wendel, welcomed their newest baby on Sunday, October 6.

The zoo said the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Anteater Advisory Group has confirmed the anteater pup is a female— something that’s not easy to determine in the species.

And the smaller anteater, pup, which made its way to Fresno Chaffee Zoo on Sunday. Zoo officials spent a full day traveling to get the pup. They left 6 a.m. By 7 p.m., she was in Fresno.

The pup, whose gender will be determined later via blood tests, was born Aug. 28 to Lou, an 8-year-old male, and Micah, a 6-year-old female. The baby’s gestation lasted 164 days, zoo officials said.

Beardsley Zoo hopes to introduce mama and her pup into the main yard by the end of September. Giant anteaters are classified as vulnerable, with fewer than 5,000 remaining in the wild.
