Mayor Cherelle L. Parker on Friday night reached a one-year contract extension with the city’s biggest union for municipal workers, ending a months-long standoff and averting a strike that could have halted city services like trash collection.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia's largest city workers union says it has agreed to a one-year agreement to avert a strike. AFSCME District Council 33 President Greg Boulware made the announcement on Friday night during a press conference with Mayor Cherelle Parker.

AFSCME District Council 33, which represents blue-collar city workers including many of those in the sanitation and water departments, voted this month to authorize a strike. Eighty-seven percent of those who voted were in favor of the strike, according to a post by the union on Facebook.

The largest municipal employee union in Philadelphia, District Council 33, confirms they have reached an agreement with the City of Philadelphia, averting an authorized strike.
