A PhD student from the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi died on Wednesday after an excavation pit collapsed near Lothal, an archaeological site associated with the Harappan Civilisation in Gujarat, reported The Indian Express.

The incident took place on Wednesday when the research team was collecting soil samples at the archaeological site of Lothal, considered to be the centre of importance of the Indus Valley civilisation.

The incident took place at around 11 AM, when a joint team comprising four researchers from IIT-Delhi and IIT-Gandhinagar had gone to the ancient port city of Lothal to study paleoclimatology.
