The town of Ocean City added an update Wednesday to its official page stating why, as of Wednesday afternoon, the beach remains closed to swimmers.

Swimming is still off limits in Ocean City as medical waste, including hypodermic needles, continue to wash ashore. Ocean City Emergency Services Director Joe Theobald said in a statement Monday evening the amount of debris has “significantly decreased,

"As of this (Monday) morning, the waste and medical debris on the (Ocean City) beach is considerably less than yesterday.," according to the town.

Water access was restricted Sunday afternoon at Ocean City and surrounding beaches after officials say a “significant” amount of medical waste had washed ashore.

The medical waste also washed up in Assateague Island National Seashore which spans Maryland and Virginia. The waste was only found on the Maryland portion of the island, officials said. They have barred beach access on the North End and swimming and wading is forbidden in the Maryland District.
