The apple’s physical qualities inspired its namesake, as Sunflare “hits all those marks,” said Jeremy Tamsen, director of the WSU Office of Commercialization, in a news release.

The apple is now called Sunflare. The name Sunflare was chosen from a public contest that attracted over 15,000 responses. This new variety is a cross between Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apples.
Evans and her staff have another apple in the works – dubbed the Sunflare. A cross of the Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink, the Sunflare is scheduled to reach grocery store shelves in 2029.
