South Korea's parliament formally introduced a motion on Thursday to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over a botched attempt to impose martial law, but his party vowed to oppose the move, throwing the process into doubt.

Around 10pm on December 3rd Yoon Suk Yeol, the conservative president of South Korea, suddenly declared martial law: banning all political parties and severely curbing media freedom. Soldiers were deployed to the parliament building and riot police lined the roads.

South Korea's opposition parties submitted an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday afternoon, just hours after his short-lived attempt at imposing martial law was overturned by lawmakers.
