Macy’s is the latest department store to announce more closures than what was expected before. Previously, the chain announced that it would be closing 50 stores by the end of 2024, according to the Daily Mail.

Macy’s had previously announced plans to shutter 150 stores in the next two years, including 50 in 2024. Now the chain said it will close 55 stores this year. The closures are a result of a shift in consumer behavior, Macy’s CEO Tony Spring said on a second-quarter earnings call.

Macy’s announced on its second-quarter earnings call that it would be shuttering 150 stores over the next few years, adding that it would close 55 stores in 2024 instead of the 50 stores the retailer projected it would close this year.

The Macy's department store chain currently operates four stores in Wisconsin malls in Appleton, Greendale, Madison and Wauwatosa.

We are pleased with the pace and the quality of deal making and now expect to close approximately 55 stores this year versus prior expectations of roughly 50,” CEO Tony Spring said this week during a second-quarter earnings call.
