Comet last seen by Neanderthals 80,000 years ago could be visible again this weekend - MSNIt’s thought the comet was last seen from Earth by Neanderthals more than 80,000 years ago, and stargazers have already spotted it in the southern hemisphere this time around.
A newly discovered comet, called C/2025 F2 (SWAN), may have disintegrated. But the remnants are still visible.
Researchers got an up-close look at the largest comet ever observed, C/2014 UN271, hurtling toward the sun from the Oort Cloud and measuring 85 miles across with jets of carbon monoxide gas.
Observations of comet C/2014 UN271 with ALMA detected complex carbon monoxide outgassing at 16.6 AU, confirming it as the largest Oort Cloud comet known, with a nucleus about 140 km across.
