CASTAIC, Calif. — Firefighters fought to maintain the upper hand on a huge and rapidly moving wildfire that swept through rugged mountains north of Los Angeles and resulted in more than 50,000 people being put under evacuation orders or warnings.

Firefighters are responding to a brush fire in the Castaic area of Los Angeles County Wednesday morning, according to the Angeles National Forest.

Hughes Fire initially started 10:53 a.m. Jan. 22 in Los Angeles County. It has burned 10,396 acres after being active for 46 hours. By Friday morning, the fire crew succeeded in containing 56% of the wildfire. The cause is, however, still being investigated.

The Hughes Fire has spread over 5,054 acres after starting just before lunchtime in Los Angeles County's Castaic Lake area on Wednesday.

The two largest fires, the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades and the Eaton Fire near Pasadena, remain active. One of the latest, the Hughes Fire in the Castaic area, has prompted evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people.

A fast-moving wildfire, the Hughes Fire, has erupted near Los Angeles, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate. The fire ignited near Castaic Lake, about 45 miles northwest of Los Angeles, spreading rapidly through dry brush.

The Hughes Fire started on Wednesday and has already burnt over 15 square miles near Castaic Lake in northwest LA.
