It was an apt - if accidental - metaphor for the precarious status of LA's unlikely mountain highway. The two-lane roadway, which climbs more than 7,000 feet over 66 miles, stretches from the suburb of La Cañada Flintridge, just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, to the tiny unincorporated mountain town of Wrightwood in San Bernardino County.

The closure begins at 11 p.m. Friday night when both eastbound and westbound lanes near Pump House Road will close.
