He played in two NRL premierships – the first in which he came off the bench in Canterbury’s 2004 win over the Roosters; the second as the hero of North Queensland’s maiden success in the 2015 grand final – in a stunning career that stretched from 2002 to 2018.

Former Junior Kangaroo captain, originally from Toowoomba (Queensland), first came under notice when he landed the winning goal for the Bulldogs in the 2002 First Division grand final. Thurston had a great season in 2003 as the club sought to avenge the stripping of its competition points when it headed the premiership table the previous year.

Johnathan Dean Thurston (born 25 April 1983 in Brisbane, Queensland) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer and co-captain of National Rugby League (NRL) team, the North Queensland Cowboys. During his NRL career he has frequently been cited as rugby league's best player.

An ambassador for the Queensland Reconciliation Awards, Johnathan has lent his voice to the Recognise campaign to acknowledge Indigenous people in the Constitution. In 2017, he helped launch the $9.5 million NRL Cowboys House, a home for 50 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from remote north Queensland.
