Women have been active participants in Laos's society, involved in politics, driving social transformation and development, becoming active in the world of business. Due to modernization and rural uprooting , women have begun to embrace lifestyles that are foreign to certain ideals.

Globally, some progress on women’s rights has been achieved. In the Lao People's Democratic Republic, in 2017, 72.3% of women of reproductive age (15-49 years) had their need for family planning satisfied with modern methods.

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is a landlocked country bordered by China, Myanmar, Viet Nam, Cambodia and Thailand. After years of regional and internal conflict Lao PDR is currently governed the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), the only legal political party in the nation.
