[7] [8] Lemp was the first American brewer to take advantage of the country's growing rail network to transport its product, building spurs from railroads' main lines and starting its own railroad to ship beer. This development led to lager becoming the dominant beer style in the country since it best withstood being shipped.

Nov 30, 2010 · In the shadow of the reinforced concrete grain silos, the small building I had shown before apparently was the locomotive house for the Lemp’s railroad. The light was really beautiful on the Saturday I was out at the Lemp Brewery.

Lemp was the first shipping brewery to establish a national shipping strategy, operating its own railroad, the Western Cable Railway Company, which connected all of the plant's main buildings with its shipping yards near the Mississippi River, and then to the other major area railroads.

An oral tradition in St. Louis links the cave system with the Underground Railroad. According to this tradition a tunnel behind the house at 3314 Lemp Avenue was used as a secret entrance to the caves.

Not content with making beer which was shipped all over the world, William Lemp also founded his own railroad company to ship product down to the riverside railyards. This small building apparently served as a locomotive house.

The Lemps also owned and operated their own refrigerated railroad, the Western Cable Railway Company, and were first in the nation to establish coast-to-coast distribution of beer. They had sales offices and distribution centers in most major U.S. cities.

Jun 1, 2017 · When I came across this photo of the Lemp Brewery I immediately thought of a 4x8 switching layout designed by John Glaab featured in Model Railroad Planning, 2008. Although his plan was based on steel, the bigger structures of the brewery would be an easy substitute I think.

Jan 16, 2019 · The ice plant, with its giant vaulted entryway on Broadway, almost certainly allowed for the lowering of ice blocks directly into the cars below right before they left the brewery grounds, pulled by the brewery short line railroad, the Western Cable Railway.
