Aug 1, 2021 · I have a Pi 4 on the way and I have been looking at different DACs to use with it. Originally I was going to go with one of the HiFiBerry HAT DAC chips, but after looking into it I found that the external USB DACs are actually better quality for less money, and that with the Pi 4 the USB is just as good as HAT.

It can do a full decode regardless of input. so even a trashy tidal integration on a media player on the pi (Volumio) as long as the MQA file is passed through, (with or without a first unfold) it will be fully unfolded by the DAC.

Depending on your audio system and capabilities of amp/speakers, you can find yourself short of volume in some cases (e.g. large, noisy rooms). For desktop or small room use – it should be enough. Frequency response is not great.
