One of the great paradigm-shifting public landscapes of the last century, the Michigan Avenue Streetscape project transformed 33 blocks of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile from an unbroken expanse of concrete into an ever-changing urban Eden.
Michigan Avenue Streetscape: 20 Years of Magnificent Mile Blooms
The first planters were installed in 1993. Displays would be changed out in Spring, Summer, and Fall to add seasonally appropriate interest and vibrance to Michigan Aveune. Straightforward concrete planters were built to house the median landscapes.

The planters span 33 city blocks from Oak Street to Roosevelt Road and were originally intended to create a cohesive look and feel between the North Michigan Avenue shops and the less-commercialized South Michigan Ave. Planters vary in length from 6 feet up to 190 feet and in width from 9 – 25 feet.
