Today we deployed our Baited Underwater Remote Video Surveys (BRUVS). Through this non-invasive technique we get an idea of the community assemblages, distribution and abundance of the different animals that roam the area. Here is a video showing our past highlights! A big thanks to Save Our Seas Foundation and Global FinPrint for supporting us with our research! :) | Bimini Biological Field Station - Shark Lab

The secret to staying motivated when you’re a marine biologist…. Focus on the highlights! Not every day at the Shark Lab is spent tagging or swimming with sharks, and there is a LOT of work that goes into keeping this place running (for 34 years no less!!) So when we’re writing grants at our computers, repairing a finicky boat engine in the hot sun, or cleaning out a bait freezer, we focus on the INCREDIBLE things we get to see and do which wouldn’t be possible without all of the not-so-glamorou

Searching through the Seagrass. Serving as one of the most valuable seafood exports in The Bahamas, Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) can be found as shallow as 1 m and as deep as 90 m throughout the coasts of the Caribbean Islands and Northeastern South America, often sheltered among coral reefs, shelfs, and seagrass beds. At night, they leave their shelters to forage, and while they aren’t picky, they can be found eating small crustaceans like snails and crabs. As an important habitat,

Crystal Clear Memories!! With the clear waters surrounding Bimini, there is no better place to take what is learned in the classroom and see it applied the same day! This past week we had students from Coastal Carolina University @ccusharkresearchlab immerse themselves into personal encounters with the sharks, rays, and abundant marine life in Bimini! _____________________________________ 📸: @wadewithwyatt #research #education #conservation #bimini #biminisharklab #thebahamas #sharks #rays #und

Have you ever seen a shark doing this before?! Nothing is wrong with this little lemon shark! It is using a method of breathing called buccal pumping. There are two breathing methods that sharks utilize: buccal pumping and ram ventilation. Some sharks do one or the other, but some can do both. Buccal pumping is the act of pumping water through the gills that sharks who are resting will use. Ram ventilators breathe by swimming and opening their mouth in order to run water through their gills. Lem

“We recently had the absolute pleasure of interacting with this BABY tiger shark in perfect, calm and clear conditions. In my experience, baby tiger sharks are very curious and this bebe was no exception. We were probably the first humans she’s ever seen, and she did a couple of close inspections before nipping off into the blue! Dreamy!” 🎥 & ✍️ : @chelleblaisphoto | Bimini Biological Field Station - Shark Lab

When interns arrive at the station they receive a few full days of orientation to the Shark Lab. One of the lectures included in this orientation is a fish ID class! This includes all of the sharks, rays, fish, and other marine critters. Pictured in this reel are interns Lewis, Toni, Emily, and Taylor practicing their fish ID skills. They are making use of reef guide books and online resources to identify marine life native to Bimini. Some species are easy to identify - such as Caribbean Reef sh

When Lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) are young, they are still learning the ropes of being a fearsome predator! It is not an uncommon sight to see a juvenile lemon shark try to eat mangrove leaves which are pictured floating on the surface in this reel. It is amusing to watch because once the shark realizes that they have a plant in their mouth and not a piece of fish, they spit it back out! Juvenile lemon sharks are frequently found in mangrove habitats as these plants have intricate root

It’s Always “Sonny” in Bimini! Named after the Shark Lab’s founder, Sonny Doc Gruber, this big, feisty, mature male lemon shark was quite a surprise catch for the research team, as we rarely see large male lemon sharks around Bimini! Sonny measured up at 263cm total length, was fully mature (calcified claspers), and he was implanted with an acoustic tag so we can track his movements for up to 10 years! - Video/photo: @chelleblaisphoto - #shotoniphone using @axisgo housing —— | Bimini Biological

The Bimini Boa, one of the most amazing attributes of the snake is its large adult size, reaching lengths of over eight feet. Once abundant on all the Bimini Islands, the population have evidently been reduced by human persecution, illegal collection and development. Former Sharklaber Grant Johnson recently visited the lab and brought a Boa he found during his stay, we scanned and discovered that she was previously PIT tagged. We hope with care and education the Bimini Boa population will recove

This Predator is not always at the top! Although Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) are highly mobile within shallow waters and effective predators for many teleost and smaller elasmobranch species. They still need to be aware for larger predators, even in the shallows. Some larger coastal sharks like Great Hammerheads (Sphyrna mokarran) have been seen predating upon these sharks. The shallow flats and channels are where Blacktip sharks hunt but if they are not careful they can become the h

An evolutionary masterpiece! Countershading on sharks is an evolutionary trait that helps sharks camouflage. With a darker dorsal and lighter ventral side sharks such as this Caribbean Reef Shark (Carcharhinus perezi) is able to blend in with the shadows of the deeper water, but also breaking up its silhouette from below. Countershading helps with both predator avoidance as well as stalking their prey. Have you ever seen a sharks countershading?? _____________________________________ 📸: @wadewi

We are excited to share this recent ultrasound footage of great hammerhead pup. Typically ultrasounds are abstract and a cross section of the pup, but in this footage you can see the cephalofoil/head of a nearly full term pup. It is exciting because this indicates the mother was close to pupping! The pregnant momma shark was fitted with an acoustic transmitter and fin mounted satellite transmitter, which contributes to our research for identifying regional connectivity and areas of reproduce for

Have you been following Dr. Tristan & Annie Guttridge's (Bimini Biological Field Station - Sharklab & Sharks Need Love) Takeover of our Instagram account? Here is one of their most powerful videos. "What’s that on her back? A boat injury? A cut made worse by remora? No one knows! The sad reality is some sharks are migratory (e.g. The Great hammerhead) so once they’ve left the protected waters of a shark sanctuary they’re no longer safe. This is just one example as to why shark tagging and resear

Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming the 11th graders from Louise McDonald High School to the Lab! 🦈 It was great to engage with local students and get to share our work with them. Spending a day at the station meant getting to know the crew, sitting in on a lecture, picking up trash at the beach and a whole lot of laughter. Special thanks to @rocktheocean for making this possible. And to @dominique_b for collaboating with us! _____________________________________ 📸: @maddalena.polla #re

Baby sharks?! Sharks have some of the most diverse reproductive modes of the entire animal kingdom. During a dive last week, a female nurse sharks swam through that looked visibly pregnant. Nurse sharks have a reproductive mode called yolk-sac viviparity meaning their pups are retained within internal egg cases. The mothers will shed the egg cases first and then proceed to give live birth to their pups after. 📸: Baylie Fadool #shark #babyshark #research #education #conservation #bimini #bahamas
