Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 (that’s the full and proper name) is at once sacred and haunted. It’s a time capsule of the city’s history with tombs of families wiped out by the yellow fever epidemics, historical figures and famous authors. It’s educational and heartbreaking, and I find the architecture as captivating as that of the nearby houses in the Garden District. The Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery commemorates the birthplace of American combat aviation, and serves as a symbol of French-American comradeship during World War I.
