HELLO, BABY PIGEON: This 2-week old fledgling pigeon, also known as a rock dove, arrived at our hospital this week after it was found near Lake Merritt in Oakland. A dog had picked up the bird in its mouth and no nest was found nearby. Because the bird is a non-native, invasive species, it can’t be returned to the wild, so our Animal Encounters department has adopted the fledgling and it will become a special ambassador that will help teach the public about native and non-native species.
